Research : Eugene Fu, M.D.

Eugene Fu, M.D.

Dr. Fu is a clinician/scientist with nearly 20 years of research experience in the neurosciences. As a clinical neuroanesthesiologist, he provides subspecialty care for patients with neuropathology and neuropathic pain. His research in neuroscience was focused on spinal cord disease and spinal cord uptake of pharmacological agents administered in the epidural space. Dr. Fu’s recent work focuses extensively on models of neuropathic pain and the role of glial cells on inflammatory mechanisms of neuropathic pain.
His projects include the use of functional genomic approaches to investigate the role of the nociceptive candidate genes in mouse models in relation to the human disease state. This work serves as a complement to ongoing NIH-funded human association and functional studies that link candidate genes with to susceptibility to persistent pain in multiple populations including osteoarthritis, temporomandibular (TMD) pain, sciatica, and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

Research Interests

  • Neural injury and neuropathic pain processes
  • Genetic mechanisms
  • Preemptive analgesia and regional anesthesia
  • Inflammatory pathways and cell transplantation
