Two University of Miami Miller School of Medicine students and a resident were honored for their clinical and research work at the annual meeting of the Florida Medical Association on July 30 and 31 at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. Three of the six awards for poster presentations went to our Miller School participants — a remarkable accomplishment since there were 100 submissions.

Medical Education Conducts Skills Exercises for Third-Year Students

The University of Miami Hospital and Clinics welcomed 198 third-year Miller School of Medicine students from both the Miami and regional medical campuses for the 21st annual Objective Structured Clinical Examinations — a medical school rite of passage that tests the clinical skills of students. More than 100 faculty members served as evaluators in the annual assessment.

Miller School Researchers Develop Revolutionary Anesthesia Formulation

An innovative anesthesia formulation developed by a University of Miami Miller School of Medicine research team could dramatically improve surgical care around the world. Unlike conventional anesthesia systems that vaporize liquid anesthetics into gas and then deliver it to the bloodstream through the lungs, the new formulation would allow this class of anesthetic drugs to be injected directly into the bloodstream.

Miller School Professor Edits First Comprehensive Textbook on Transplant Anesthesia

A Miller School professor has edited the first scholarly textbook in the field of transplant anesthesia and critical care. “Transplant anesthesiology is an emerging field of medicine that requires specialized skills and knowledge,” said Ernesto A. Pretto, Jr., M.D., M.P.H., professor and Chief of the Division of Solid Organ Transplant and Vascular Anesthesia at the Miami Transplant Institute.

Anesthesiology Team Trains Cuban Physicians in Historic Medical Education Mission to Havana

A team of anesthesiologists from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine recently completed an historic medical education mission to Havana, training 21 members of the Cuban Society of Anesthesiologists on acute pain management. The January 29-30 conference, “2016 Acute Pain Workshop Cuba,” focused on ultrasound guidance, multimodal analgesia and evidence-based practice.
