Message from Division Chief

The central mission of the Division of Solid Organ Transplant and Vascular Anesthesia is to provide the most advanced anesthetic care available today to our patients who, because of end stage organ failure, require a kidney, liver, pancreas, intestine, or multi-organ transplant. Each physician anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist CRNA in the division is a highly skilled professional with advanced training in anesthesia and transplantation medicine. Moreover, the care we provide is administered with the aid of the most modern life support medical equipment, in state-of-the-art operating rooms, and in an environment of mutual respect and compassion.

It is our firm belief that excellent medical outcomes can only be achieved when all individuals in the interdisciplinary team are appropriately educated, trained and equipped to perform the task required. Therefore, we are firmly committed to continuing medical and nursing education for each team member. Residents and fellows in the division are fully engaged in the management of transplant patients with close supervision and guidance by faculty members. Our fellowship training program consists of a broad-based core curriculum in transplantation medicine, with an emphasis on a fundamental understanding of the evolution of disease to end stage organ failure. Since co-morbid disease is common and frequently severe in patients with end stage liver, kidney, intestinal, or diabetes, this further increases the challenge and the learning potential afforded to each resident or fellow.
In addition, our faculty, fellows, and residents are encouraged and have opportunity to participate in research in both the basic and clinical arenas. We are committed to innovative and cutting edge medical research both within the division as well as in the department of anesthesiology, and in collaboration with other divisions within the Miami Transplant Institute, the Diabetes Research Institute and other Miller medical school departments and centers.

In summary, we provide an outstanding clinical service to our patients while maximizing educational and research opportunities for faculty, fellows, residents and nurses in the division.
