The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology comprises an integral part of the multidisciplinary team of experts providing comprehensive cardiac care at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital. As a well-known tertiary referral center, the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital draws patients from throughout the United States and internationally. Our Mission is to provide superlative comprehensive anesthesia care throughout the peri-operative period, ensuring maximum patient safety and comfort. Towards this goal, the latest cutting-edge anesthesia techniques are employed, such as Trans-Esophageal Echocardiography (TEE) as a monitoring standard. Our vigilant care does not start or stop with the often-challenging anesthesia management during the actual surgical procedure. Anesthesiology faculty also work with other experts to optimize the patient pre-operatively, as well as closely monitor the patient in the post-operative setting. Indeed, the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology is responsible for overseeing the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Units at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.
As an academic center, the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology also strives for continuing quality improvement in care of the cardiothoracic patient through both education and research. In the area of education, residents and fellows actively participate in care of patients undergoing cardiothoracic procedures, eventually disseminating their skills into the communities in which they settle after graduation. Faculty, fellows, and residents are also encouraged to participate in research related to cardiovascular and thoracic diseases at both the clinical and basic science levels.
